Close on the heels of Dennis Forbes's Intimate Egypt Book One, selected b&w photos of ancient Egypt's monuments (2009), comes Book Two in this ambitious series. As explained in Book One, Forbes was able to convert many of his color photos into high resolution black and white images, often with sharper details than those in color. Book One covers the Delta, Alexandria, Cairo, the Giza pyramids and the necropolis of Sakkara while Book Two deals with Middle and Southern Egypt. There are fewer images in this second volume, particularly in Middle Egypt as the author was shooting in beta-format video rather than snapping still photos. However, there is much to enjoy with extensive coverage of arguably Egypt's most beautiful monument, that being the Temple of Seti I at Abydos; the Ptolemaic period Temple of Hathor at Denderah; the Luxor Temple and its Avenue of Sphinxes and the modern town of Luxor.
Amongst the several tombs at Tuna el-Gebel at el-Ashmunein (Hermopolis) in Middle Egypt, the large Ptolemaic period Tomb of Petosiris (a priest of the god Thoth whose worship was centered at Hermopolis) is particularly interesting because of its raised relief decoration in a unique blending of Greek-style imagery and traditional Egyptian. One might wish there were photos of other sites in the vicinity, but the series is obviously not intended to cover every site in Egypt, but rather primarily those which are best known and best preserved.
The extensive coverage of the Temple of Seti I; the Denderah temple and the Luxor Temple more than make up for the lack of photos of lesser known sites. The inclusion of several photos of the modern town of Luxor makes for a sharp contrast with those of the ancient monuments although even here one can see examples of "Egyptianizing" architecture. This reviewer for one is eagerly looking forward to Book Three, which will no doubt deal with the great Temple of Karnak at Luxor and the royal mortuary temples on the West Bank.
